Dish with arms of Castile
Manises, possibly; Valencia, c. 1450 - 1475
42.6cm (diameter)
tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica), lustred
The scroll-work is a motif of Islamic origin, but the symbolism is Christian: the triple-towered castle is from the arms of the Spanish kingdom of Castile, and the three fishes interlaced on the reverse of the dish are a symbol of the Trinity.
